Vans held the final Hi-Standard event of the season on Saturday, April 14th, 2012 in Winter Park, Colorado. Naturally the weather was a typical Colorado spring mix of wind, snow, clouds and sunshine. And although Colorado hasn't exactly had the best winter on record, Winter Park's Railyard Snowboard Park was in great shape with two big booters for local riders to showcase their skills. But unlike your regular huckfest contest, the Hi-Standard Series is all about style – no spins over a 540 are permitted. This means riders are judged on solid steeze and classic tricks. 20 shredders were whittled down to 10 for the finals, and a low pressure, 45-minute jam session determined the winners.
1st: Davis Johnson, 2nd: Blake Axelson, 3rd: Chad Otterstrom
A $4,000 prize purse was up for grabs, which drew longtime Breck legend Chad Otterstrom out to compete. Kurt Sorenson and Seth Bruce manned the mic, while Vans Team Riders Eric Willett, Darrell Mathes and Nick "Pooch" Poohachoff took care of the judging and determined the winners. In the end, it was Davis Johnson with his sick combos and clean landings that earned him First place, $2 Gs and the coveted golden boot. Paul Weston took the Pro-Tec best trick award and $500. Everyone had a great time thanks to Al and Mario cooking up free hot dogs, serving up snacks and handing out Vans goodies from the RV at the bottom. Thanks to everyone who came out and we'll see you next season!
